St Verena and the Three Holy Youth Coptic Orthodox Christian Center

Saint Verena and the Three Holy Youth Coptic Orthodox Church was established in 1999 to serve a primarily English-speaking congregation with an active youth. In 2001, the congregation purchased the existing building with classrooms suitable for a school on the land.

All services are held in English. The church helped establish a system of using Powerpoint presentations to aid parishioners in following the liturgy. Also, the church is the publisher of the popular “Holy Pimoly” animated series aimed at instructing children in the Orthodox faith using an easy-to-understand cartoon character.

St. Verena

St. Verena, an Egyptian saint, is celebrated for her remarkable journey and commitment to her faith. According to tradition, Verena was a young woman who joined the Theban Legion, a group of Christian soldiers from Thebes in Egypt. The legion was sent to Europe to serve in the Roman army.

During their travels, Verena and the Theban Legion found themselves in Switzerland. Despite facing persecution for their Christian beliefs, they remained steadfast in their devotion to Christ. Verena, known for her unwavering faith and compassion, became a source of inspiration and strength to her fellow soldiers.

Verena's ministry extended beyond her fellow soldiers. She dedicated herself to serving the local population, caring for the sick, and offering assistance to the needy. Her acts of kindness and miracles earned her a reputation as a beloved saint in the region.

After the persecution of Christians intensified, Verena, along with several members of the Theban Legion, was martyred for her faith. Her relics were later discovered in Switzerland, and a shrine was built in her honor.

Today, St. Verena is venerated as a patron saint of Switzerland and is remembered for her courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to Christ. Her story serves as an inspiration to all, emphasizing the importance of faith and selfless service even in the face of adversity. The memory of St. Verena continues to be cherished by the Coptic Orthodox Church and all who seek her intercession.

The Three Holy Youth

The story of the Three Holy Youth, also known as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, originates from the Old Testament of the Bible. During the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, these three young men were among the Israelites who were taken into captivity.

King Nebuchadnezzar, desiring absolute loyalty, commanded everyone to worship a golden statue he had erected. However, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego remained steadfast in their faith in the one true God and refused to worship the statue. Their unwavering devotion to God infuriated the king.

In response to their defiance, King Nebuchadnezzar ordered that the three youth be thrown into a blazing furnace as punishment. Bound and cast into the flames, a miracle unfolded before the king's eyes. Instead of being consumed by the fire, the three youth were protected by God's presence. Astonished, King Nebuchadnezzar saw a fourth figure, resembling a divine being, walking with them in the fire.

Witnessing this extraordinary sight, King Nebuchadnezzar called the youth out of the furnace unharmed. He acknowledged the power and greatness of the God they served, and he decreed that no one should speak against their God under the threat of severe punishment.

The story of the Three Holy Youth is an inspiring testament to unwavering faith and divine protection. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity and persecution, God's presence can provide strength and deliverance. The story holds a significant place in religious teachings, emphasizing the importance of remaining steadfast in one's beliefs and trusting in God's sovereignty.
