Just as a person who is in peril at sea amidst a tempest casts his baggage overboard, so too does he who despises the obstacles on the path of God amidst this word, which is a sea ready to drown him.” – St. Isaac the Syrian 

“Those who are going to receive the kingdom have given aid to the poor like good, faithful Christians, following the words of the Lord and confidently hoping in His promises…If they [Christians] add not charitable actions, they remain sterile, only observing the first part of the commandment, “Stay far away from evil,” and not the other part, “and do good.” Thus, when He says, “Come, receive your kingdom,” this call is not given because they have lived in chastity, refrained from stealing, or have not taken advantage of the poor or robbed other people’s possessions. Rather, it says, “Because I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat.” This act of charity is recognized as all the more important since the Lord was silent about the rest of the virtues and only focused on this merit.” – St. John Chrysostom
