Weekly Newsletter: April 3 – 9

Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.” The number forty which is produced by multiply the number ten by four, is usually taken in scripture for the perfection of a right way of life, for anyone who does the works of a perfect way of life fulfills the ten commandments of the law through the four books of the holy gospel. One who behaves in a way devoid of the love of God and neighbor, which scripture commends equally in the law and in the gospel, has two less than this perfection. The Lord taught this mystically as He healed the weak man, when He said, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” “Rise” means shake off the sluggishness of the vices in which you have been ailing for a long time, and rouse yourself to the practice of virtues, by which you will be eternally saved. “Take up your pallet” means lovingly carry your neighbor, patiently tolerating his weaknesses, since He patiently put up with you for a long time when you were still weighed down by the burden of temptation. “Bear one another’s burden, and thus you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal 6:2). – Venerable Bede
