There once lived a young woman, the daughter of a governor, who had a demon inside her. The father of this girl knew a monk, whom he persisted in asking to heal his daughter. The monk replied, “No one can heal your daughter except some anchorites. But if we summon them, they will not consent out of modesty. Instead when they come to the market to sell their handiwork, pretend that you want to buy their wares and invite them to your house to give them the money. When they come, then ask them to pray for your daughter.” So, they went to the market place and found a certain elder, who was sitting there to sell his handiwork. The governor’s men took him and led him to the governor’s residence. Now, as soon as he entered, the demonized girl ran up to him and slapped him. The monk then turned the other cheek, putting into practice the commandment of the Lord. This behavior tormented the demon who immediately left the woman. Those around glorified God and said that nothing so annihilates the devil as humility.” – Saying from the Desert Fathers & Mothers
