“Do you see that your practice of life has more power to do good? By practice I mean, not your fasting, nor yet your covering yourself with sackcloth, but rather if you are kindly affectionate, if you give your bread to the hungry, if you control anger, if you cast out vainglory, if you put away envy. This Christ Himself taught for He said, “Learn of me for I am meek and lowly in heart.” And this I say, not to depreciate fasting, God forbid, but rather to highly commend it. But I grieve when you think fasting is enough for salvation and neglect other duties. For the greatest thing is charity, and moderation, and almsgiving; which hits a higher mark even than virginity.” – St. John Chrysostom
