Blessed Apostles’ Fast

Certain monks approached Abba Pachomius and asked him to share one of his visions that he had seen. He answered them, “A sinner like me should not ask God of to see visions. For without God’s will, visions are misleading. Hear now about a great vision.” Expecting to hear about an ecstatic episode, the monks were surprised when instead Abba Pachomius answered: “What is greater than to see the invisible God in a visible person who is His temple. If one looks around and see one’s fellow human beings, then one can enjoy an interrupted clairvoyance. Moreover, God judges us not by whether we were given visions, but by the way we treat the images of God that are before us all our lives.” For Abba Pachomius, seeing the invisible God in the visible human being was the greatest divine vision.  – Sayings of the Desert Fathers
